Road Uhuru Stuck, Veered into Ditches When Dating Margaret

When a young Uhuru Kenyatta was hunting for his future wife Margaret Gakuo he drove to Karen suburbs, a challenging journey he overcame because of love.

Margaret, daughter of late Dr Njuguna Gakuo, the first African Managing Director of Kenya Railways was brought up in Karen, the Rhino Park side which is serene, tranquil and deeply forested but with not-so good roads.

Accessing Margaret’s home they used Rhino Park road, then a rough road and even access roads to home was not better. They were narrow like cattle-tracks.

It was a bumpy ride that son of founding President endured in 1970s and 80s when he sneaked to meet his lover. During rainy days he veered off into ditches or stuck in the mud.

“Uhuru stuck in the mud and other times veered off into ditches as was case with other motorists using that road. It was in wanting condition but government did not take care of it because very few people lived in Karen then and especially deep inside the forested areas like where Margaret’s home is” a resident recalls.

He adds; “He was a love smitten man so that did not deter him from going there. You know with love you can surmount a lot”.

Decades later this road which is off Dagoretti Road is being expanded and tarmacked, coincidentally by Uhuru’s administration.

Margaret’s neighbours included former Cabinet Minister Maina Wanjigi, the father of billionaire businessman Jimmy Wanjigi. The other neighbour is veteran lawyer John Khaminwa.

Jimmy Wanjigi and Margaret’s older brother Maina Gakuo made it easy for Uhuru to reach the girlfriend.

That time Uhuru drove a Mercedes 190, registration number KWT 185. A car he possessed since his high school days at St Mary’s School aka Saints.

Uhuru and Margaret relationship started in mid 1970s when both were high school students though in different school. It blossomed in 1980s.

It happened that Uhuru and Margaret’s brother Maina were schoolmates at Saints. Margaret was at St Andrew School in Molo.

Maina introduced Uhuru to his younger, beautiful sister and the President’s son grabbed the opportunity with zeal and pursued her like a hunting lion.

Even after they pursued individual education abroad, Uhuru kept going down the coarse road to see fiancé. They wedded in 1989 at the Holy Family Basilica.
