Ruiru’s Sleepy Dam where investors are raking millions

A day in 2016 a bored Jay Munuve decided to visit an entertainment getaway bordering a dam in Ruiru after a friend hinted to him about it.

He wanted to watch boat rides he heard were drawing customers there by numbers. It was a visit that would later transform the thrill on the dam neighbouring the getaways.

The place is called Courtesy Beach and is two kilometres off Thika Superhighway at toll station. Several pubs border the dam which before independence was used by White farmers to irrigate their coffee farms.

When Munuve toured there, the hyped adventures turned to be slow rides on non-motorised boats. He vowed to offer more exciting thrills.

“I saw an opportunity to give this place a Mombasa-like thrill. I asked myself if customers were excited by slow boat rides what about a motorised one or even high-speed rides? I approached the pub owners and my wish was granted” he says.

Munuve brought in three jet skis that changed the dullness on the dam. That offered customers to cruise at over 100km/hr while doing mind-blowing maneuvers.

He operated the jet skis in Mombasa for three years but his shift to Ruiru dam was a gamble that paid off. Today during weekends and holidays customers throng the area to ride the jet skis. He makes over Sh20, 000 per weekend.

“Many people travel to Mombasa to pay Sh3, 000 for 15-minute ride on jet skis but here with Sh500 you can do a two-kilometre ride” he says.

The zeal to invest in jet skis started in Bangkok, Thailand where he took a ride and loved the machines. He bought the three machines in 2013 at Sh970, 000.
