President William Ruto has vowed to challenge the dominance of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Raila Odinga’s political stronghold of Luo Nyanza as politicians prepare for the 2027 general election.

The country’s leader, while launching a branch of his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party in the Homa Bay Town constituency, stated his intention to create a nationwide party that does not rely on tribal politics.

“The era of tribal-based political parties is over, and that’s why I urge Kenyans to support parties with a national outlook,” President Ruto said.

He urged residents of Odinga’s stronghold to join the UDA party, promising them government appointments.

“Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy Eliud Owalo, and Secretary of the Ministry of Interior Security Dr. Raymond Omollo, among others, defied the political tide in this region that supported Mr. Odinga, my main rival in the presidential race,” he said.

UDA, which garnered support in 39 out of 47 counties in the 2022 general election, is positioning itself for the 2027 elections.

Despite receiving less than one percent of the votes in Homa Bay County, President Ruto expressed no discouragement and assured that he would not discriminate against residents who did not vote for him.

“Your Governor, Gladys Wanga, was elected on an ODM ticket, and we are still working together for development,” he said.

UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala noted that Homa Bay had the highest number of party members, totaling 136,000, among the four Luo Nyanza counties.

On December 9, 2023, the party will hold its leadership elections, with only party members eligible to contest for positions.

Former Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero called on residents to support President Ruto in the 2027 general election.

Other leaders and dignitaries present included Secretary Dr. Omollo, Minister Owalo, Mining Minister Salim Mvurya, Roads Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, and six members of parliament, including National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Senate counterpart Aaron Cheruiyot.
