President William Ruto has provided assurance to Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) that their salaries will be reviewed to align with those of legislators in the National Assembly.
Addressing the commencement of the 8th Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Ruto revealed that the government has sought advisory guidance from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to address this matter.
“I’ve requested the SRC to offer comprehensive advisory on salary and wage matters, an issue that our nation must address collectively,” Ruto affirmed.
Highlighting the principle of fairness, Ruto emphasized the need for equitable remuneration across all public servants, irrespective of their roles’ varying demands.
He underscored that all public servants, from the President to junior office assistants, contribute to the country and should be compensated accordingly.

“We share the same nation, responsibilities, and expenses – schooling, upkeep, food, and healthcare. Compensation should reflect our shared dedication to the people,” he stated.
The President noted with concern that certain individuals in parastatals and state institutions have awarded themselves disproportionately large salaries, surpassing even the President’s earnings. Ruto questioned the rationale behind such remunerations in comparison to the responsibilities undertaken.
Earlier this year, MCAs from all 47 counties rallied for increased salaries and allowances, threatening to boycott budget approvals if their demands were unmet.
The resolutions, including salary parity with national legislators and the reinstatement of plenary allowances, were presented to the SRC.
While the SRC proposed a Sh10,000 pay increment in response, the plenary sitting allowance demand remained unmet.
In light of these developments, the MCAs’ monthly remuneration rose to Sh154,481 in the 2023-24 Financial Year, with a further increase to Sh164,588 anticipated in the 2024-25 Financial Year.
