Kitengela Towns is one of the fastest growing centres in the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.

The transit town on Namanga road is cosmopolitan and business seem to do well as compared to the other towns in Kajiado County.

Though Kitengela has its flip-side; as pertaining crime and water shortages, it is regarded as one of the bedrooms of Nairobi.

Thousands live here and commute to Nairobi everyday. Several matatu saccos operate the Kitengela-Nairobi route and one of them is Rembo Shuttle, which is the most preferred sacco.

Rembo Sacco Chairman Stephen Okerio says from their figures they transport more than 25, 000 residents to neighbouring Nairobi City.

“Kitengela is expanding very fast. Commuters to Nairobi line up for matatus during rush hours. It being a transit town business is good” Okerio says.

Photos we took before COVID-19 struck the country proves the dusty town is busy and spectacular one especially when viewed from above.

Foreigners, especially from Nigeria and Congo have found home here. They lead the group of people who love binging everyday and this has attracted drinkers from Nairobi and Machakos Counties to have fun here.

Longton Jamil, one of Community Policing Leader in Kitengela reveals that pubs, hospitals, churches, groceries, transport and hardware stores are the leading businesses.

“I don’t know which legit, simple business you can establish in Kitengela and fail to pick up. Pubs owners here have successful tales” Jamil says.

Sometime back crime was on the rise especially in the residential areas. There was re-emergence of Mungiki, thugs on the run had taken refuge here and other criminal gangs had started establishing base in Kitengela.

“That time Kitengela had lost its reputation. People were fearing to buy land here but now things are good. Crime is no longer a big issue as it was then” Simon Kiarie a resident says.

There are more than 3, 500 registered bodaboda riders here and over 200 tuk tuks.

Churches too have flocked Kitengela. On a 500-metre stretch along the Nairobi-Namanga highway there are around 10 churches competing for faithful.

Residents are optimistic that once the Coronavirus pandemic is over business will resume with a bang and especially the entertainment ones.

“We miss that Kitengela you would come any hour at night and find it buzzing. Guys enjoying themselves and others making money from their small businesses” Kiarie says.
