“Both the cow and my son died. The cow fell on him, crashing his head, and breaking his limbs,” said Tabitha Etemesi, the mother of the deceased.

Residents of Emukaba village in Lurambi constituency, Kakamega county, were left mourning after a cow accidentally crashed a man to death inside a well.

Gordin Oningu Shivoko 46, was digging a well when a cow accidentally slipped and fell inside, killing him on the spot.

A witness told Wananchi that the cow was grazing around the well when it accidentally fell inside the pit.

“I saw the cow become restless as it was feeding around the area, and kept jumping up and down, unfortunately, it slipped and fell inside the pit that the man was digging,” said, Mary Khasiala, the owner of the home where the incident happened.

Mr Shivoko was removed from the pit after residents mobilised rescue efforts, but was sadly pronounced dead after being lifted from the well.

“Both the cow and my son died. The cow fell on him, crashing his head, and breaking his limbs,” said Tabitha Etemesi, the mother of the deceased.

Confirming the incident, the area Assistant Chief Scholarstica Olando said the body of the deceased was taken to Kakamega mortuary.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. I ask residents to use safety precautions whenever they are engaging in certain activities to avoid accidents,” said Olando.

According to the ‘Watsotso’ traditions, the cow would not be eaten.

“The cow will be cut off with its skin, and its meat distributed to dogs or buried.

“People are not allowed to eat the meat. If they the meat, then such an omen will befall the community again,” said Gilbert Mwakali, an elder from the Emukaba village.
