The family of veteran journalist Sophie Ikenye has made an urgent appeal to the public, seeking to raise KSh 5 million to cover the costs of a critical surgical procedure and ongoing medical care.
Ikenye, whose illustrious career has made her a household name in Kenyan journalism, has been battling persistent health challenges for the past eight months.
In a heartfelt statement shared over the weekend, the family revealed that despite their best efforts to cover her medical expenses through personal savings and insurance, they have now exhausted all available resources.
“We are reaching out to you—her family, friends, fans, and well-wishers—to help us raise KSh 5 million to facilitate urgent surgery and continued treatment,” the statement read.
Sophie Ikenye is best known for her role as one of the main anchors of Focus on Africa on BBC World News, where she has earned widespread recognition for her professionalism and dedication to journalism.
Before joining BBC in 2009, she worked with leading Kenyan media outlets such as KBC, Citizen TV, and NTV Kenya.
Her contributions to journalism have been celebrated across Africa, including being named among the 100 Most Influential Young Africans and 100 Most Influential Young Kenyans in 2016.
The appeal has sparked an outpouring of support from fans, colleagues, and well-wishers on social media.
