Joyce Murabu, the Managing Director of Sunrise Training College in Thika, has urged parents to play a more active role in their children’s education, stressing the crucial role of parental involvement in laying a solid foundation for their future success.
In a recent engagement session, Murabu expressed concern that many parents tend to disengage once their children transition to colleges or universities, mistakenly believing that their children no longer need guidance at that stage.
“At Sunrise Training College, we have been working on ways to encourage parents to stay actively involved in their children’s learning. This involvement not only fosters a strong bond but also ensures that children feel supported throughout their educational journey,” she explained.
Murabu emphasized that a parent’s role in education extends beyond the school gates.
“Parents are the first teachers, imparting essential life lessons at an early age, and this responsibility doesn’t end once a child enters higher learning institutions. Unfortunately, many parents have lost their place in their children’s educational lives and are unsure of how to reassert their influence,” she added.
Murabu also highlighted the diverse programs offered by Sunrise Training College, including Health Sciences, Fashion and Design, Engineering and Technology, Business Studies, and Hospitality. She noted that these courses are designed to equip students with practical, hands-on skills to thrive in their chosen careers.
“We’re not just about academics here at Sunrise. Our goal is to provide skills that enable our students to succeed professionally, which is why we offer a wide range of practical courses that align with the growing demand for skilled professionals,” Murabu explained.
She further encouraged parents to become involved in their children’s education through parent groups and school boards, advocating for a focus on core values that will guide students’ understanding of the world.
“Your children are incredibly vulnerable, especially as they embark on their university or college journey, and your involvement with their education, along with a strong relationship with their schools and teachers, is vital. Remember, your role as a parent continues throughout their lives,” Murabu stated.
She also warned that a lack of follow-up on children’s academic performance often leads to poor results, urging parents to provide both emotional and financial support to ensure academic success.
“Parents must be proactive in supporting their children’s education. When there is no follow-up, children can become complacent, leading to poor performance,” she cautioned.
