Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been secretly moved to one of the roughest prisons in the UK after concerns over his safety the Sports Bible reports.

Mendy only featured for Manchester City in the first week of the new campaign.

The Daily Star reports that the France international player was moved just before Christmas to top-security prison Strangeways over fears for his safety.

The decision was made as the Category-A conditions at Strangeways were felt to be better equipped to deal with any potential issues as compared to Liverpool’s HMP Altercourse prisons where he was formally held.

Mendy, who arrived at the Etihad in 2017 from Monaco, was suspended by City last August after he was charged by police. The 27-year old’s trial preparation and a plea will be heard on 24th January, with the trial scheduled to start on either 27th June or 1st August.
