Car owners in Kenya have expressed growing concern about the increase in car muffler thefts in recent years. The practice is particularly common in areas around Globe Cinema, Roysambu, Nyamakima, and other roadside garages like Utawala, Donholm, and Umoja.
One car owner, Susan Wairimu, parked her car in Zimmerman and returned to find that her muffler had been stolen. She was shocked and frustrated, as she had no idea how to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
Susan is not alone. Many other car owners in these areas have also reported similar incidents, leaving them feeling vulnerable and helpless. The theft of a muffler not only leaves the car owner with a poorly-performing vehicle but also can be costly to replace.
It is believed that many of these thefts are carried out by unscrupulous mechanics who remove the mufflers from parked cars and replace them with inferior or damaged ones, which they then sell to unsuspecting buyers. In some cases, the stolen mufflers are also sold for scrap metal.
The increase in muffler thefts has prompted some cities in Kenya to take action. Some have increased police patrols in areas where muffler thefts are common, while others have introduced tougher penalties for those caught stealing mufflers.
Car owners in these areas are advised to park their vehicles in secure locations, preferably in well-lit areas with CCTV cameras. They are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the authorities and to have regular maintenance performed by reputable mechanics.
In addition, some car manufacturers have begun using more advanced security features on their mufflers to make them harder to steal. However, until the trend of muffler thefts is fully addressed, car owners in these areas will continue to feel frustrated and vulnerable.
