Thika Matatu Sacco to Run Pilot Test of BRT System

As the national government gears towards the full operations of The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along Thika Superhighway, one of the matatu saccos operating on this road will be used in a pilot test.

The NeoKenyaMpya in collaboration with Scania, the Swedish automaker will do the trial of BRT buses this weekend.

The Thika-Nairobi route Sacco announced they will offer free rides during the pilot test.

“We are happy to announce in line with our strategy to be part of the future of Transport in Kenya. NeoKenyaMpya will be partnering with Scania to trial BRT pilot buses this Weekend” the Sacco management stated this afternoon.

Adding; “We are excited to be part of this project!! Keep on the look out for the buses as we seek to offer some free transport then”.

Late last week BRT buses were spotted operating at night along Thika road ferrying passengers.

The President Uhuru Kenyatta’s project to decongest Nairobi city led to the modification of Thika Superhighway to enable the BRT buses use, pick and drop passengers in the inner lane of the highway.

It will start with 100 high-capacity buses and the number will be increased to over 300 buses if it picks as expected.

Francis Gitau, the director general of Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority said the operations will be officially launched in June.

NeoKenyaMpya will run the BRT pilot test.

The big buses to be used in this system have been designed by the Scania East Africa which is a subsidiary of the popular Swedish automobile manufacturer.
