A new Coast Tourism circuit has been launched in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife to bolster visitor numbers in Kenya. The initiative unites national and county governments, along with private sector partners, to create a strategic approach to attract tourists through enhanced marketing and enticing travel packages.
Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, highlighted that the initiative will involve extensive local and international marketing and resource mobilization among stakeholders.
“We want a unified work plan to address issues systematically,” she said, adding that the ministry aims to reach 2.5 million visitors by 2024, with a long-term target of 5 million by 2027.
Emphasizing the importance of youth involvement, CS Miano stated, “Tourism is Kenya’s biggest foreign currency earner, and we aim to train young people as goodwill ambassadors, whose innovation will drive industry growth.”
CS Miano also met with Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, stressing the critical role of Mombasa as a prime tourist destination.
Governor Nassir, in turn, expressed the county’s commitment to enhancing tourism infrastructure, such as developing Mama Ngina Park, and called for its management to be handed over to the county.
He noted that the new circuit would facilitate a cohesive tourism strategy among coastal counties.
