Several people, including police officers, were injured in Mombasa during protests against the 2024/2025 Finance Bill.

Violence erupted when protesters attempted to march towards the Mombasa State House through Mama Ngina Park.

The demonstrations, which began peacefully at around 9 a.m. and attracted thousands in the city, initially saw no police intervention.

However, chaos ensued when protesters tried to head towards the State House.

Police began to disperse the crowd with batons, causing the protesters to scatter. They regrouped later, and some began clashing with the police.

In Nakuru, by 4 p.m., police were struggling to prevent protesters from storming the local State House.

Protesters threw stones at the police, who responded with tear gas and gunfire was heard during the commotion.

Our reporters counted at least five police officers being assisted by their colleagues after sustaining injuries, while several civilians were aided by Kenya Red Cross personnel to receive medical treatment.

In Kilifi County, protests occurred in both Kilifi town and Malindi, where hundreds of residents took to the streets.

In Malindi, police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the rioting protesters.

“There were a few youths causing trouble, but we managed to calm the situation,” said one of them, identifying himself as Peter Pogba.

In Taita Taveta, protesters disrupted traffic on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway for a while, demanding their objections to the Finance Bill be heard.

Further demonstrations were witnessed in the counties of Lamu, Tana River, and Kwale, all with the same call to oppose the Finance Bill.

In Kwale County, protesters attempted to storm the office of Msambweni MP Feisal Bader but were stopped by the police.
