He later pursued a Master of Business Administration at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

His dedication to the legal field was evident through his active memberships in the Law Society of Kenya, the Institute of Certified Secretaries, and the International Commission of Jurists.

In 2006, Chebukati founded Cootow & Associates Advocates, a Nairobi-based law firm, where he served until his appointment as IEBC Chairperson in January 2017 by then-President Uhuru Kenyatta.

After completing his six-year term on January 17, 2023, Chebukati retired from public service. In early 2025, reports emerged about his declining health.

He was admitted to a Nairobi hospital, where he remained under medical care until his passing on February 20, 2025, at the age of 63.

The exact cause of his death remains undisclosed, with his family stating that they are yet to establish it.

President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, describing Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.”

He further added:

“His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace.”
