Governor Kimani Wamatangi‘s recently launched initiative, the monthly clean-up exercise, has garnered significant attention with a section of residents lauding and criticising in equal measure.
Dubbed Mazingira Bora, Jukumu Letu, a section of residents have likened the programme to that of “Kaa Sober” which was initiated by former Governor Ferdinand Waititu.
It’s the Kaa Sober program that led to Waititu facing corruption accusations that occasioned his impeachment from office.
While the Kaa Sober program had a stipend, Wamatamgi’s initiative is about volunteering.
Wamatangi recently said that his program aims to unite county staff members and the community in their pursuit of a cleaner and healthier environment.
He encouraged all residents of Kiambu County to join hands in making their surroundings cleaner and greener. The initiative has already taken place in various places such as Limuru, Thika and Kikuyu among others.

“I am calling upon every resident of Kiambu County to participate in the exercise wherever they are, as it will be happening in all 12 sub-counties,” Wamatangi emphasized passionately.

Amidst commendation for Wamatangi‘s proactive approach to enhancing the environment, political players in the region and concerned residents have urged caution, fearing potential misuse of public resources.
Political analyst, Mwaniki Njoroge , emphasizes that while the exercise itself is commendable, it must be separated from any misuse of public resources and advocated for transparency and fiscal responsibility, urging the governor to ensure that taxpayer money is not diverted to support the initiative.
“Wamatangi should operate this initiative differently from how his predecessor Waititu executed it. He should always make it clear that participation is voluntary, and no public money is being used,” emphasized he said.
Kiambu Woman Representative Ann Wamuratha launched a similar initiative, the “Wamuratha Empowerment Program.”
In a recent clean-up exercise in Kirigiti, she emphasized the importance of a clean environment in fostering happiness, motivation, and good health.
“When your environment is clean, you feel happy, motivated, and healthy. As we celebrated Nature Day, we cleaned up Kirigiti market,” she shared.
