Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria is winding his stay at the helm but he fears area Senator Irungu Kang’ata who has laid plans to succeed him.
Wa Iria has a scheme to have his preferred candidate yet to be made public succeed him but Kang’ata is apparently gelling well with electorates, a move that has made the incumbent angry and uncouth.
This confrontation is expected to hit crescendo now that President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed confidence in Kang’ata after he pushed his appointment as the Senate Majority Chief Whip this week.
During the 2017 campaigns, the duo were buddies but now they are sworn enemies and Wa Iria has resulted to calling Kang’ata a “bhang smoker” because of the Senator’s love for reggae music.

Kang’ata is fond of attending reggae and reggae concerts and mingle and dance with fans.
“When you smoke your things don’t bring issues to me. I deal with milk and what you use I don’t question. I don’t ask you about your rolls so leave my milk” Wa Iria humiliated the Senator in recent public event.
Adding; “If you want to reduce effects come for some milk but when you smoke it just be quiet”.
The two became foes after Kang’ata during a Senate Public Accounts Committee grilling of Wa Iria asked about issues raised by Auditor-General regarding Murang’a Cooperative Creameries.

The governor resulted to insulting Kang’ata in the public.
This year Kang’ata opposed Wa Iria’s Murang’a County Avocado Processing and Marketing Bill 2020 and this has aggravated their conflict.
The Senator and middlemen believe that the Bill negates the free market ideals but Wa Iria claims Kang’ata is working in cahoots with middlemen to exploit farmers.
However, word on the ground is that Wa Iria is worried about his political future when his term ends in 2022 without having a successor he can puppet.
In 2013 and 2017 elections Wa Iria differed with his former employer Peter Munga, The Equity Bank founder and other wealthy men from Murang’a.

According to people close to him, he is now on a mission to have a replacement he can control so to fight back his rivals but he is worried how Kang’ata is working his way up in the grassroots.
“Kang’ata has decided not to be confrontational. He is not willing to fight with Wa Iria, especially on insults he is a weed smoker. He is doing well on the ground and if he keeps that enthusiasm he will be the next Murang’a Governor” a source stated.
