Tycoon and former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo would not be where he is today were it not for a lady in Mombasa who gave him a job that turned around his life.

The lady fondly called Mama Mutua hired Kabogo in 1984 when he was just 21 years old and had just arrived in Kenya from Punjab University in India where he got a degree in Commerce.

She is now an old lady living peacefully at her home in Mombasa.

Kabogo praises her thus; “God bless you Mama Mutua, you played a big role in molding me to be who I am today. Respect and love forever”.

Like other graduates directly from the school, he was in dire need of a job. He had tried job at the office of Auditor General but that lasted only four months.

In 1980s in Mombasa, Kabogo (Left), Mama Mutua and a colleague.

There he was earning little money compared to work he did, he claimed in a past interview.

“They were paying me peanuts and they were giving me postmortem work. You know as an auditor, you go through old files, I was going through files of people who had even died,” he claimed.

When Kabogo went to Mombasa and sought job from Mama Mutua who was then in an NGO, he got it right away.

There he started as a business advisor to women groups, then became the project accountant, next was Finance Director post and eventually the executive director when Mama Mutua retired.
