Why Musician Mike Rua’s Father, Aunt Love his Dirty Songs

Mike Rua, the king of Mugithi who is popular for songs laced with lewd lyrics has revealed that his father is aware and okay with contents which he belts out to his fans, a majority revelers.

His x-rated songs are loved and loathed in equal measure and many wonder if his parents listen to them.

He said his mother is not aware but his father and an aunt are not only familiar with the songs, they encourage him to go on as it is his source of livelihood.

In a recent interview Rua who admitted he is naughty said;

“My mum thinks I am still performing the general secular songs. She doesn’t go to clubs nor listen to Mugithi. She is a Church woman”.

He revealed; “My father knows these songs but he prefers to cheza chini. Out there he pretends he is not aware but because he has not offered me or connected me to a better job, I continue. Actually he motivates me to continue”.

One of his aunt Wanjeri wa Ngugi is a big fan. She tells him to keep doing what he loves because he is not committing any crime.

Rua says if he stops mixing his songs with dirty words that would mark the end of his career. His fans ask for it and they go for his shows to get the unusual entertainment.

The one-man-guitarist from Mang’u, Kiambu County started singing after he dropped out of Gikindu secondary school and relocated to Githurai where he joined band of late musician Queen Jane. He was a bass guitarist.

He was earning Sh300 per show but one event he performed alone and along the way threw in some nasty words and booom, the crowd went wild and started giving him money.

“I realised I was gaining popularity and money through the unusual way of re-mixing these songs. Putting some vulgar words” he said.

Today the big artist performs in upmarket clubs like Galileo Lounge in Westlands and Space Lounge & Grill along Lang’ata Road.
